Economies of Scale

Interest accrues on any unpaid balance every hour, compounding onto what's owed rather than requiring an immediate payment. Taking out a loan doesn't change your net worth by itself -- only unpaid interest actually costs you anything over time. Credit rating runs from AAA (no debt, or comfortably able to cover it) down to D (over-leveraged with negative cash flow) -- it looks only at how much of your borrowing capacity you've used and whether your most recent tick's cash flow could cover this tick's interest, not at your overall finances. Your rating also sets the interest rate shown above: BBB or better pays at or below the plain rate a fresh loan in your country would carry, anything below BBB pays a premium above it, down to half that rate at a perfect AAA and up to double it at the worst, D.

Selling shares raises cash from the public without borrowing, but the buyers then take a cut of every profitable hour as dividends, and your own stake in the company shrinks.
